The aircraft inertial reference system (IRS) uses the ring laser gyro rather than the standard rate gyroscope to sense angular rate about the roll, pitch, and yaw axes. The aircraft IRS system mainly provides inertial navigation data to user systems. The system is referred to as strapdown because its sensors are directly mounted to the airframe. The aircraft IRS system provides necessary heading and attitude reference accomplished through computations based on accelerometer and laser gyro sensed signals. Aircraft IRS system has alignment that consists of determining local vertical and initial heading. Both accelerometer and laser gyro inputs are used for alignment.
