Market Definition / Research Scope
A Keratometer consists of a ray of light that is projected on the cornea, where it is reflected in the "mirror" that forms its convex face, giving a specific image of each of the main meridians of the cornea and whose difference constitutes the corneal astigmatism of the eye. It’s a diagnostic instrument used to measure eventual refractive errors of the eye, by measuring the curvature of the outer surface of the cornea.
Being a handheld instrument, it counts with several levers and rotors to adapt the device.
The instrument nowadays is commonly used in contactology in the adaptation of contact lenses, since knowing exactly the central curvature of the main corneal meridians is essential to calculate the radius of the first trial lens, which is one of the first steps of the individualized contact lens fitting process. However, its main purpose is for measuring the extent of refractive errors, such as astigmatism, or for the detection of other refractive errors by refractive surgery procedures.
